Surf Camp Siberut wave and palm markSURF CAMPSIBERUT
First-trip field note

Start with the route, not the wave list.

The Mentawais reward preparation. Your best first camp is the one that matches your surfing, connects cleanly with the ferry and does not require an expensive boat every time you want a manageable wave.

Describe your real surf day

Do not choose from your best session at home. Think about the wave size you enjoy repeatedly, how comfortable you are on shallow reef and whether a long paddle changes your confidence.

A mixed-level group should choose access for the least experienced surfer, then use optional boat missions for the stronger surfers.

  • State your reef experience honestly
  • Ask which breaks work on smaller days
  • Check whether a guide joins the surf boat

Map the transport before the camp

Siberut, Sipora and Pagai use different ferry destinations and final transfers. A camp can look close on a map and still require a separate boat after the fast ferry.

Work backwards from the island sailing, add a Padang buffer night and avoid an international return flight that depends on the same-day ferry.

Compare daily access, not only room rates

A basic camp beside several walkable breaks may beat a cheaper room that needs fuel every day. Ask how many waves are genuinely reachable on foot, which ones need a shared boat and what happens when only one guest wants to travel.

The useful quote separates fixed travel costs from optional daily surfing.

Remote does not mean unprepared

Travel insurance with evacuation cover, reef-cut supplies and spare essentials matter more than extra clothing. Power, mobile signal and medicine access vary between camps.

A simple camp can be excellent value when those limitations match what you expect.
